Pet Pain Management

At Cherokee Trail Veterinary Hospital, we pledge to assess and address pet pain with skill, compassion, and respect. As a member of the AAHA, we follow rigid standards for care in treating and managing pain in our patients.

Pet Pain

Pet owners often struggle to identify pain in their animal companions. Animals are adept at masking pain, creating a false impression of a comfortable animal. Our veterinary team understands pet pain and suggests pet owners look for these common symptoms:

  • Sudden behavior changes
  • Excessive licking or chewing a spot on the body
  • Diminished or no appetite
  • Limping or lameness, sometimes intermittently
  • Restlessness, irritability, or aggression
  • Panting when at rest
  • Hesitation or unwillingness to participate in simple activities
  • Dilated pupils
  • Unusual vocalization
  • Inappropriate elimination and household accidents

We make every effort to identify these subtle cues that a patient is uncomfortable and accurately diagnose the source of the pain. Once diagnosed, treatments can often be applied immediately, even before you and your pet leave the hospital.

Pet Pain & Surgery

When our patients are scheduled for surgery, we anticipate the level of pain they might experience and treat them accordingly. Our proactive approach to pain management is designed to keep patients comfortable throughout the surgical experience, from initiating the proper anesthesia to medications for home care.

Pets that are comfortable after surgery heal faster and more effectively. Even post-surgical rehabilitation can be a relatively comfortable experience with modern techniques and innovations such as laser therapy.
